WOMEN'S MEDIA WATCH

The Women's Media Watch has been the cornerstone of SAMGI since its inception in 1994. It grew from the recognition that women, particularly those at a grassroots level, were marganilized from the mainstream media.

In an effort to integrate these voices, Women's Media Watch created a platform through which individuals could participate in an ongoing dialogue to bring transformation to the media.

Women's Media Watch core activities are focussed on using the media to deepen democracy and entrench gender equity, to produce and distribute media that acts as a forum for South African citizens and portrays positive images of women and men. We also monitor and research the media to provide empirical data on gender in the media. Our approach is a human rights based one, that treats gender as one area of focus, but by no means exclusively so.
